Ewoks on sale

185A9976.jpg

Along the highway somewhere in Saskatchewan, there are Ewoks on for half price.

First of all, I didn’t even know you could buy a good Ewok here in the middle of the prairies. But there you go.

Just call me the bearer of useless information.

The Incident

I don’t really know where to start in this story of mishap. Depending on who you are, your level of disturbed will vary.

And I’m sorry for that.

This day began like any other, coffee, news, yoga, post yoga smoothy.. you get the drift, then off to a couple of photo sessions. Perfect really. A day like any other. Funny how the Universe unsuspectingly sends a shit storm for no other reason than to amuse itself at your expense.

Over the lunch hour I ran into Safeway with the intention of grabbing a quick bite on the go (you don’t need to know all this but I like to share) I go through check out and decide I have to pee. Like really have to pee. Best do that before I’m off to the next photo session, right?

Ladies bathroom is taken. I’m waiting, and I’m waiting, the sounds of repeated helpings off of toilet paper roll are echoing from behind the closed door and I’m thinking, do I even want to venture into that room after this women has completed whatever the hell she is doing in there? I mean it’s been a bit too long for it to be deemed oxygen friendly. So I go in the mens, its a one room show which is awesome really. This way you don’t have to worry about other “patrons” of the opposite sex venturing in.

I set my phone and wallet on a somewhat safe ledge and turn around abruptly to put the seat down and that’s when it happened, my keys, lock remote and all, slow motion it seems, are tumbling into the air! I’m watching in disgust and horror trying to strategically time catching them before they take the plunge, but nope, no stealth moves or quick saves are in the cards this day..

Ploop - straight down into the toilet.

And there they lay. True story

What - the actual- Fuck ..

Pretty sure you can imagine some other choice words coming out of my mouth. All interjected by the word, you guessed it, fuck.

Well what choice did I have? With lightening quick speed that would have served me better while the keys were in mid-flight, I plunged my hand into the icy depths of this very public male dominated toilet,, and grabbed my keys.

Big nasal belly breaths - big nasal belly breaths- I need to calm and oxygenate my brain, I realized I had been holding my breath. Like that’s gonna solve anything while plunging my hand into a filthy pube ridden toilet.

I could not scramble to the sink fast enough to start scrubbing my E.coli tainted appendages. My hand, my arm and yes, my keys. I wanted to vomit. But instead I started to laugh. For real? I mean who fucking does this? How does this happen? Why? why? why!?

I think I peed at some point, I can’t remember. I believe I was in shock.

There was a gentleman waiting for his turn in the ‘mens’ washroom when I exited this water closet of hell. The look on his face was pretty entertaining, and on any other day there would have been some fucks given on my behalf, at being busted coming out of the mens washroom.. But not this day.. nope. Not this time. The recent key trauma was just too great.

I might have a mild form of PTS. This trauma is very recent and I haven’t been formally diagnosed. As I write this account of my horrific fumble I feel anger, confusion, chills, a compulsive gag reflex and some denial. Pretty sure a night with my “wine group” will make all things right with the world again. Pray for me.

Well played universe, Well played.

Happi'Ness

Our little slice of HappiNess

It’s true, this place could be a metaphor for happiness. Depending on your level or need, for urbanism.. This may or may not, be your cup of Starbucks. But for myself and bae ( I’ve always wanted to say that ) it is pretty damn soul filling in all its’ snowy winter wonderland, back to nature splendour.

For me this, Ness Creek mini mid winter get away, was just what the doctor ordered. Metaphorically speaking. Frigid temperatures and all.

Our little cabin was perfect and had everything we needed, aside from a bathroom and running water. If you’re into that kind of thing. I mean, whatever.

Not to worry there are flushing toilets and hot showers in another building just a hop skip and a jump away. Maybe two hops, but not far I promise.

There was plenty of cosy heat provided by some electric heaters and a fresh water jug in our kitchenette. I absolutely loved the wall wisdom, hand written with marker or pencil, on the walls and ceiling throughout the cabin.

A few steps away there was a community cabin called Ness Quarters with a washer/dryer and a fully equipped kitchen for communal use.

I brought a slow cooker, why is this something I needed to share? Well, let me tell you - In times of limited kitchen facilities, this or an insta pot can be your one- stop -pot life saving Swiss Army knife. It also helps fill the gap with no BBQ’ing option because in -30, those little tin grills just can’t keep up.

Had mother nature been a little less manic we would have Barbecued for sure. Brad and I really do love our camping( please refer back to bae reference). So this was a perfect little getaway.

One of my favourite little spots amongst all the cozy cabins and Boreal Forest was the warm and comfy straw bale house. Resident care taker Perry kept the wood burning stove going through out the day and past my bedtime, which isn’t saying much. .

It was glorious and oh so warm. Pretty sure I just got a shiver there. This sweet little straw bale house comes equipped with a kettle, fridge, couches, vintage record player, and an arsenal of vinyl for your groovy listening pleasure. When one talks of vinyl records groovy is perfectly acceptable verbiage.

There is also a flat screen TV. But given where we were, and the purpose of our little get away, it just seemed wrong to engage. I think it would have killed that “remote cabin in the woods vibe” Besides we can watch tv at home right?

Wifi is available but I think it works best in Ness Quarters. We didn’t have much of a signal in our cabin, but the cell service was great.

Cross country ski’s and snowshoe rentals are available, and there are plenty of groomed trails for the light of heart, and hard core outdoorsman. Pick and choose your level of pain my friends.

I really wanted to snowshoe but given the temperatures I was talked out of it. Ok fine, not much persuasion was needed.. so we went on a small hike instead. Which I decided was probably harder than the frickin snow shoeing, being the snow was up to my damn knees, (hence the sole purpose of snow shoes) my ski pants were 2 sizes to big, and I felt like I was hiking in a space suit. It was ridiculous, and I need to burn them, never to be worn again. I shall banish them forever.

Ski pants for sale

But all that aside we were submersed in the tranquility of a Northern forest with towering pines, and plenty of fresh air, I was at one with nature - and calories were burned.

The view from our cabin

The view from our cabin

Sometimes I forget just what Winter in the Sask can offer. I loved our little hike, caught up on some writing, read a book, and played some Scrabble. Perhaps snow shoeing or cross country skiing next time. Without the Ski pants.

We came, we saw, we kicked its’ ass - Sorry, I couldn’t resist. No ass was kicked, but if anyone remembers what movie that is from let me know in the comments below.

Our Ness Creek cabin was perfect and I really can’t wait to go back.

Side note for the “non” Saskatchewan readers - Numerous functions and annual music festivals are held out at Ness Creek in the summer months, when the air is not so Arctic. I hear it can be pretty busy. The beauty would remain the same, but I’m thinking the quality of mid winter tranquility could be affected. Regardless, I’ve never been in the summer months, so don’t take my word for it. I highly recommend arranging your own little adventure to this cool little gem, in Northern Saskatchewan.

Some buildings throughout Ness Creek camp

Thanks for the the love Ness Creek

Frosty nose hair smiles-

Ninety Seven

Grandpa Russ - This birthday thing is some serious business

Grandpa Russ - This birthday thing is some serious business

This sweet soul turned 97 in December.

His name is Russel and he is my husbands paternal grandfather. The family gathered and celebrations were had.

Although some physical ailments have decided to challenge his everyday, this man still lives on his own and is sharp as a tack.

Russ like to keep up on the worlds current events, and loves challenging the ladies around town to a good game of crib. Much to his favour there are not many bachelors to compete with at his ripe age.

This wise guy has some serious quick wit, and his sense of humour brings a smile to my face whenever he is in the room.

Losing his wife of 65 years to cancer 9 years ago, I am in awe of his dedication to making each day the best it can be.

Happy birthday Grandpa Russ. I am inspired, blessed and oh so grateful to be a part of this family you created.

Cheers to you

A Seasonal Rant With A Side Of Tea

Well I don’t know about you but I’m feeling this whole summer thing came and went way to fast. There has been no gradual easing into the crisp cool of fall.

Leaves are turning scarlet and crimson, they magically lull me into seasonal tolerance. Yes it’s beautiful, but I am never ready to say goodbye to summer. Never.

A list of some of my favourite coping rituals for easing into the fall season, below.

1. Morning coffee on the deck - although this takes place lately in toque, mitts, and a blanket. I stay true to this ritual until there is risk of frozen appendages.

2. Hot tub - It keeps ya toasty warm but still feels like i’m indulging in an outdoor activity.

3. Shopping for fall wardrobe - Although the fall thing is depressing, the shopping is therapeutic. And I always need a new sweater.

4. BBQ’ing - Until -40 and deathly wind chills make this favourite summer past time impossible.

5. Sunday cooking in my kitchen- Fresh summer produce, and cooler temps make Sunday Funday in my cozy kitchen a must.

6. Drink wine - Although not a seasonally specific past time, it goes exceptionally well with all of the activities listed above.

Enjoy -

xo Tam

Mountain Time

Travelling in general is near and dear to my heart. But the Canadian Rockies, well they hold a special place in the old ticker. I've been travelling there for summer get aways since my boys were wee little.

Hell I loved being there so much I would pack those little turkey's up,  diapers and baby wipes in tow,  and haul ass out to the mountains (also Grizzly country) with a tent.

The Tent

The Tent

The vast beauty, giant mountain peaks, and towering aromatic pines were worth the risk of being dragged out of our tent in the middle of the night by a deranged and starving grizzly.

Ok that would probably never happen, but in the pitch black darkness of the night your mind does tend to be a little over active. After all there is merely a flimsy wind breaker between myself, my children, (one of which may or may not have had a full diaper), and a 1700 pound carnivorous beast.

We now have a trailer. A pretty big one at that, and the walls are definitely thicker than that of the old tent. The real perk is not having to hang your ass out in the dark forest at 3am to pee.

Trailers with bathrooms are the best.

So our little family vacations have evolved. It's rare both boys can be there, jobs and holiday time are always an issue as with most families. This particular trip my youngest was unable to make it.  But that just makes the times we can all be together that much more special.

Hold on to those days where the kids are still in the back seat. They fly by way to fast.

Summer in the Sask

IMG_20180531_150033_286.jpg

Two things I know for sure. Summer is most definitely the best season of all in here in Saskatoon.  But the heat can be downright oppressive when one is not prepared, nor climatized.. or summerized if you will.

And winter weather sucks ballz..   In a -- My skin on my face hurts and my lungs are collapsing from frozen air inhalation kind of way.

And the reason for this opinionated outburst? Perhaps the fact that upon writing this, it had been in the plus 30's for over a week, and in home air conditioning is a luxury I do not possess.  Dyson and I are having a turbulent love affair. It’s like he gets me, like really gets me.  Don’t tell Brad.

Oh yes I do have air in my SUV,  and the trailer.  Living the dream people.   It is not unusual to see me driving around aimlessly in 30+ above. Or taking a random road trip to the lake, so my trailer can become my editing cave until mother nature regulates herself.

And really is it that bad? Probably not. But in my defence I am a Canadian girl, born and raised, and we just are not used to long stretches of intense jungle heat with hormonal hot flashes on the side. I am used to sledding, snow banks, blizzards, and frosty beer by the backyard fire pit.  Between the hours of 2pm and 11:01 What can I say I'm a rebel.. ( damn you city of saskatoon)

Thats Abby, clearly annoyed by the 2pm - 11pm Fire pit burning bylaw

Thats Abby, clearly annoyed by the 2pm - 11pm Fire pit burning bylaw

Now it may seem like I’m bitching. I kinda am, but deep down, not really. Just voicing my discomfort and sweaty distress. There is a difference.

Here is what makes this perspiring, peri-menopausal, on the verge of self combustion - glorious bitch smile.

I swear I’m more creative in the summer. Ok probably not. But it feels that way.  It’s the energy in the air, and it changes for sure.   That chillin’ summer vibe if you will. The newly emerged greenery and all that springs to life after the chilly winter slumber.

Or maybe it's our mischievous, backyard, nut hunting Squirrels hopping and running along the top of our fence tormenting our dogs.

It's most definitely our delicious bountiful gardens, and giant shady trees. Camping and campfires. The smell of fresh cut grass, rolling thunder and fresh rains. Walks along the South Sask river.

My overgrown ferns to my right, rustling in the breeze, and straight ahead our giant towering poplar with leaves waving. They sound like ocean waves rolling up to shore. And all this as I sit outside, under my gazebo, writing these words.

And nothing tops our bright burning, horizon dominating sunsets, hence the handle "land of living skies".

Ahhh yes, it's summertime.

With heat stroke looming I need to remind myself that our summer heat waves are so worth it.  And there are always a million and one kick ass things, (slight exaggeration but it's how I roll),  going on here in this great city/province this time of year. It's like we need to cram every festival and function into a hot and steamy 2 month period. Without a doubt there is something for everyone.

Jazz Festival, music festivals, food festivals, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan , PrairieLilly river tour, hiking, camping, Lake life, ball games, football, picnics, BBQ’s .. Over 100,000 lakes, Waterfalls, ancient ruins, art galleries, museums, micro breweries, wineries, canoe trips, Kayaking, amazing golf courses,  You get the idea.

Jazz Fest dog -  On a side note, bangs can be such a commitment.

Jazz Fest dog -  On a side note, bangs can be such a commitment

Oh Saskatoon, you really are absolutely beautiful in the summertime with a river running through it all.

Breathe deep and soak it up my friends. It always seems to go by way to fast.  That miserable ass old man Winter is lurking in the background awaiting his icy return.

So despite my temperature discomfort, am I gonna let this heat keep me down? Hell no!

Am I going to run naked through town square?? Still nope! Ok the thought may have crossed my mind but I am fairly modest, and not that hormonally unstable, yet. And does Saskatoon even have a time square?

I do love this place in all it’s summer glory. It is, despite my rant my most favourite time of year. I hope if you ever come to visit, you get to enjoy every perfect hot steamy moment, sprinkled with a few of our awe inspiring sunsets.
